Hangover Cures

We all know the sensible thing to do is not to drink to the point of a hangover in the first place but let's face it, it happens to us all at one point or another so how can you minimize the fallout? Below are a list of remedies and old wives tales which aim to cure.

We are in no way saying any of these are a good idea or that they are likely to work so take it all with a hefty pinch of salt and good humor and bear in mind we are a Glasgow Restaurant not doctors!

If you have an alternative 'cure' send us a comment via the form below and we'll post the best and most original suggestions!

01. Hair of the Dog

In case you'd not heard of this cure it's the idea that having an alcoholic drink the morning after will help ease the pain. This will only appear to cure your hangover as it introduces more alcohol into your system and effectively numbs you to the previous nights shenanigans, in truth, it only suspends the effects until your 'hair of the dog' wears off and then hits you with a vengeance. If you are going to go down this route then it's been claimed more than once that a Bloody Mary is the way to go..

1 1/2 oz vodka

3 oz tomato juice

1 dash lemon juice

1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

2 - 3 drops Tabasco® sauce

1 lime wedge

Shake all ingredients (except lime wedge) with ice and strain into an old-fashioned glass over ice cubes. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add the wedge of lime and serve.

02. Water

This is the only point thats tried and tested. The nature of alochol makes you visit the little girls/boys room more often therefore making you dehydrated, it also reduces the amount of potassium in your body which is what causes the dizzyness, cramps etc. When dehydrated the brain shrinks away from your skull slightly and is not as well supported hence the pounding headaches. Best you can do for yourself is rehydrate as much as possible.

03. Coffee, coffee, coffee

Hands up those of you who immediately reach for the coffee the morning after…thought as much! We all do it, but it's possibly one of the worst drinks we could be having (if you ignore the hair of the dog) Coffee is a diuretic and therefore makes you pee more than normal, add that to the fact that you are already dehydrated from the night before and you're just asking for the headache to last longer. As was said in point 2, you can't beat a good pint of water, or at the very least wash your coffee down with a good drink of water!

04. Fry up

The sheer amount of calories in a fry up goes towards giving your body an energy boost to help you get through the day. And there are some claims that cysteine in eggs that helps clean up all the toxins. Only problem with a fry up is it smells amazing, looks great but can you get past the first mouthful!

05. Sleep

You've put your body through alot and it has a fair amount of repairing to be getting on with. If you have the time and your pounding head will let you then try to get more sleep. This will let your body repair itself faster without having to devote energy to general day to day functions such as moving!

Going Global - Studying China Law is Key to Tapping this Emerging Market

Today, all eyes are on China in its emergence as the world's next potential superpower. With a population of 1.3 billion and a workforce that the U.S. State Department estimates at over 710 million, China's economy is burgeoning. The country's exports alone total over $760 billion, and range from electronics and apparel to furniture and medical equipment. With the country's GDP growing at around ten percent per year, it's no wonder that companies ranging from Google to Wal-Mart are trying to gain a foothold. After all, China is a country of consumers as well as of producers, and businesses around the world see China as a ripe market for goods and services.

Those looking to the bright future of China are quickly discovering that a key element of breaking into that market will be a thorough understanding of China law. In fact, many students are choosing to study at a China law school, such as the Tsinghua Law School at Tsinghua University in Bejing. The Tsinghua LLM degree, analogous to a degree in jurisprudence, has been conferred upon students from countries around the world, including the U.S., Spain, Italy, Australia, Japan, and Canada. A China LLM communicates to players in the global economy that the person holding the degree is well versed in China law and can navigate the nuances of the legal system in that country.

Such knowledge is critical, particularly because the law in China is evolving. The country has a long and sometimes contradictory legal history, dating back to the seventh century, when laws were first codified. From the mid nineteenth century through the mid twentieth century, Chinese law developed to more closely resemble Western law. Today, there are really three legal codes, one for Mainland China, one for Macao, and one for Hong Kong. The laws for Mainland China rely heavily on German civil law, whereas Macao's system has it roots in Portuguese law and Hong Kong in British common law.

According to the U.S. State Department, the next five years are key in determining China's place on the world economic stage. A State Department report says, "To investors and firms, especially following China's accession to the World Trade Organization in 2001, China represents a vast market that has yet to be fully tapped and a low-cost base for export-oriented production. Educationally, China is forging ahead as partnerships and exchanges with foreign universities have helped create new research opportunities for its students." It goes on to say that half of China's exports are produced by enterprises that have foreign investors, and that the country has the largest foreign exchange reserves in the world.

This all bodes well for those who choose to study China law. Competing in such a vibrant, growing marketplace requires knowledge of both the Chinese legal system and the ways in which it changes in response to its changing economic landscape.

How Do You Find The Right Lawyer?

Finding the right lawyer is a difficult and tedious job. It is almost like finding a doctor, when you are sick. You want to find a specialized doctor. There is a vast range of legal specialties. Sometimes it is very difficult to pick an experienced lawyer from the Yellow pages. Most advices often are so general.

Lawyer should be picked from their expertise. People often look for a lawyer, when they are confronted with a crisis like divorce, family death, or serious injury. Many people often pick a lawyer who is supportive and friendly. It is important to research lawyer's experience and background. Choosing a lawyer simply because he or she is supportive will lead to many problems later. It is important to have enough time to search for a good lawyer. Your search may take several days. Therefore, you should begin as fast as possible.

When you ask your lawyer a question, he or she should have an answer. An experienced lawyer should be able to take action at once. He or She should not have to "get back to you later", "let me think about it, or "let me call you back".

Do not hastily pick your lawyer. A television advertisement may be a good starting place, but it may be not enough. The Yellow pages are paid advertising. You might want to visit your local county law library.

If you have a family lawyer, you might want to consult him/her. However, he/she may not always be your best choice. Nothing beats experience. You should follow our suggestions before a final decision.

How To Become A Respected Actor With A Long-Lasting Career

The mystic of Hollywood brings thousands of would-be actors out to Los Angeles every year. They feel they've "got the goods" to make it as a star, so they arm themselves with a reproduced digital photo taken by their best friend and a few community theater gigs under their belt to book a series regular part on CSI: Miami. After a few months, their money runs dry and the only auditions they've had are for one student film and a soft-porn flick. No bookings, no series regular to hoot about, and no call back from the resume mass mailing to agents.

Some of these actors stay longer, but most eventually go home... by the thousands. This is the myth of Hollywood, that everyone wins the lottery if you just move in.

Wayne C. Dvorak is a successful acting coach in Los Angeles area who knows what it takes to really make it as an actor and have a long-lasting and satisfying acting career. Here are his answers on how to overcome the myth of Hollywood in order to create an acting career that is successful and award worthy.

QUESTION: What do you say about the myth that you don't need training to be a successful actor?

There are several kinds of careers in Hollywood. One successful kind is to become a personality actor. These actors are basically playing themselves – such as a stand-up comedian like Ray Romano or a beautiful woman like Pamela Anderson; those people's careers are built around their personality. It's a type of career, it's part of show business, and their audience has a difficult time accepting them as anything else. Personality actors aren't really focused on in-depth acting. Of course, there are exceptions, like Rosie O'Donnell. But, if you really want to be an actor that is known for your acting (not just your personality), then you have to be willing to do the work it takes to actually become one. And that takes dedication. It takes dedication to learning a craft. And I think that with most people they just don't take the time. Actors need to really work. They need to sit down and do something serious.

QUESTION: So you don't need talent?

Learning how to act most certainly does not give you the talent. The talent is already there. But, actor training shows you how to use your talent and develop it, which is the key. You have to do the training in order to be considered for complex character parts. And, actors who have a real craft stand a chance to have a long-lasting character. They have an actor range. They are not just a one-trick pony.

QUESTION: But if I've been in community theatre, isn't that a good place to learn how to be an actor?

Our U.S. community theatre is often just bad. So even though you can be totally sincere, you may still be learning the wrong technique and creating bad acting habits for yourself that will have to be overcome if you eventually want to become a television and film actor. For the most part, community theatre productions are not cast well, and young actors play roles which they could never play professionally so they learn tricks to get the show up. When the emphasis is on getting the show open but not really learning how to best use yourself as an actor, then that is how you develop those bad acting habits.

Many people who come to Hollywood have bought the 'dream factory' thing. And then, it takes them a while -- if they do come to the realization -- that they have to work on their acting. And I'm not saying it has to be done in a class, but it should be some place where you're getting guidance from a knowledgeable professional who really knows what he or she is doing. Because a bunch of people getting together, throwing something together like a community play, is not necessarily going to help you to learn.

QUESTION: What about the myth that there's no such thing as technique or a method to acting – it's all in how you say the words and in your look?

I disagree. Although it's true that a lot of acting techniques will teach you flashy things or tricks, an effective technique or method to acting will provide you with the tools and approach necessary to be believable and consistent – creating a real acting career.

For example, a lot of people will teach you how to read from scripts and say "this line would be a lot more effective if you said it this way," but it may not be the emotional truth of what the scene is. So finding a way to say a line is not necessarily doing the job, unless you are doing television comedy or sitcom work; but even in this media, the actors must be truthful in order to deliver a believable character. This is true also in drama and film comedy when you want to not only be able to say funny things but also find the core of the character – who the character really is. And that's what an in-depth acting technique will teach you how to do.

QUESTION: There are so many people giving workshops and classes in Los Angeles. Many of them say, for example, that it only takes six weeks to get ready for pilot season. Why would I want to spend more time than that to be a working actor?

One of the problems that I think exists in Los Angeles is that a lot of the current coaches haven't gone through any of the acting process themselves (from training to booking and performing). This may lead them to give bad advice that doesn't work outside of class, or their approach might be intellectual but it may not have a lot of practical application. For example, I once worked on a film where a fellow actor missed lines in the script while filming, and afterward the director wanted to know why she missed the lines. She said it was because she didn't feel she was "in the moment," so she didn't say the lines – it was what her coach taught her. This infuriated the director. So, coaches have to know not only how to teach technique but also give real-world advice.

Also, a lot of the training that is going on in Los Angeles is not taken in steps – A, B, C. Instead, workshops and six-week programs jump all over the place with technique, character work, and scene study. And the result is that people often miss points of development and have serious gaps in their acting understanding.

What actors need to understand is that acting gets into the expression of deep feeling through character. So while a writer gives you the narrative of the story, you have to go to the depth of the feeling. That's what actors are adding to a story – the actor supplies the inner life and the subtext and depth of the real person. Therefore, the bottom line is that if you are a serious actor, six weeks of training cannot give you the emotional depth and technique needed for lead and supporting roles, series regulars, recurring characters, and guest stars – and even a majority of co-star roles.

QUESTION: I've been told that all I need to do is get into a class with one of the "guru coaches" in town so that I can put that coach's name on my resume. Then that will get me in the door to book acting jobs. Isn't that all I need?

No. First and foremost, booking acting jobs takes talent and technique, not a certain coach's name on your resume. And, the reason you work with a coach is to improve your skill. Also, many of these coaches have over 30 people in a room. How could each student possibly be given the opportunity to work and explore a technique with anything other than superficial feedback under those circumstances? The actors should get up in each and every class and be expected to bring in something that has been given serious work and attention -- not once every 4-5 weeks.

In my case, I limit the number of students I have in my classes to no more than 12 students in each class because I like to spend quality time with my students. Because of the manageable class size, I can remember exercises from months ago for each student and know what is the next step that needs to take place. This is the kind of relationship you want from a coach, so that you can ultimately book acting jobs.

QUESTION: From the 2007 Academy Award best actor/actress winners, what do you feel they brought to their performances that brought them such success?

I thought both Helen Mirren (The Queen) and Forest Whittaker (The Last King of Scotland) were really amazing. They both captured real souls of non-fictional characters. This is sometimes the most difficult character work to do because we do know who these two characters are in real life, and the actors somehow managed to get that. And these actors' personal personalities are not like their characters at all.

Mirren and Whittaker have paid their dues. They've gone from late teens into their twenties and thirties. And in the case of Mirren, into her sixties -- reinventing and growing and evolving as a human being. A lot of times I think people stop evolving, and I think that's a mistake.

The 5 C's of Top Film Festivals

Top film festivals are known as such because they have essential characteristics which make them the most sought-after and reliable among the sea of film festivals. The names such as Cannes, Berlin, Venice Biennele, Toronto and Sundance would never emerge as household names for top film festivals if it weren't for the 5 C's which keep them unparalleled in success. Here are the five C's-- ingredients of top film festivals.

Most of the top film festivals had a firm cause to hold on to when it began. The ultra-grand Cannes film festival began as a protest to political usurping of awards in Venice in 1939. The Berlin film festival, another one of the top film festivals, was also created in pursuit of reviving the German artistic expression through film Top film festivals will not really have that much leverage if they do not have an inherent mission statement to begin with. Be it for political reasons or desires to augment culture and art, top film festivals have a cause often worth fighting and attending for.

Sundance is a prime example of top film festivals which stayed consistently. Most of the top film festivals didn't really hit it big the first year it began to showcase filmmakers. Even in debt, Sundance continued to plug away in keeping with the spirit of giving individual and unknown filmmakers a chance to make it big in the movie scene. Consistency is an essential ingredient which make a film festival part of the top film festivals of the world. If the organizers of these top film festivals were not as resourceful and persistent with their goals, we would not be privileged to view high quality films that we see today.

All top film festivals never really made it alone. Connections by form of unlimited subsidies and support, attendees, and filmmakers who want to be recognized and make it big in the film industry make up the structure of top film festivals in the world. Top film festivals showcased films but it truly showcases people and their love for film in more ways than one. Involvement of noteworthy celebrities also help in the marketing of film festivals. Robert Redford's involvement in the Sundance in the late 1970's helped it become the prestigious Utah film festival that it has evolved into today.

Top film festivals are diverse. They do no limit themselves to a single category. Most of the top film festivals are of international quality, and graced by people from all walks of life with a flair for the big screen. Various categories which show how top film festivals expand over time are also indicators of how top film festivals cater to the needs of the times and arrange their categories accordingly.

What made Cannes Film Festival the best of the top film festivals? It is partly due to their flexibility. Change is inherent for every kind of endeavor to succeed. The only inevitable thing is change, and this adage extends in the makings and nuances of top film festivals. Changes in jurors, categories, venue capacity, focus and theme form the pulse of the top film festivals. The ushering of new technology is no source of threat to these top film festivals. Rather, new changes in the environment and in the world propel them to reach greater heights and gain more leverage in showcasing better and bigger films for all the world to see.

Finding Legal Aids in New York

One of the growing trends throughout the country is providing free legal aid to persons who cannot afford adequate legal representation. When it comes to legal aids in New York, there are a number of different ways to locate attorneys who have chosen to provide legal assistance to persons who require the services of a lawyer, but whose current circumstances prevent them from being able to hire legal counsel.

One of the easiest places to look is in the yellow pages for your local telephone service provider. A number of attorneys will include in their information their affiliation with a legal aid program. By scanning through the section for attorneys and also looking under the heading of "legal aid services" it is a safe bet that you will find several attorneys in the New York metro area that may be able to help.

A visit to the local courthouse may also yield some results. A number of the court houses in the New York metro area maintain listing of attorneys that are available to take on cases where the defendant does not have assets to use for payment. Many of these will also be affiliated with one free legal program or another. These legal aids in New York listings are free for the asking, so you may be able to find an attorney off this sort of list that would be right for you.

Checking with friends may also be a good way to find several legal aids in New York. Perhaps a loved one has needed legal counsel in the past and was unable to afford it. In this scenario, your friend might be able to introduce you to the attorney that he or she was able to work with. At the same time, your friend may still have documents with lists of free legal aid attorneys in the area.

If all else fails, check out the Internet. When it comes to legal aid in the city and state of New York, you will find a number of sites that discuss the structure of the programs, who sponsors them, how to qualify for free legal aid and where to make your application. In some cases, you can begin the process online.

Keep in mind that you will not receive legal aids in New York just on your say-so. You will have to prove that you are unable to pay for attorney services and then submit an application. Once you are accepted, then you will be able to meet with an attorney and begin the process of dealing with whatever legal issue you have on your plate.

Practical Differences between LLCs and Corporations

When considering business entities, it can be easy to lose the forest for the trees. Half the battle is simply understanding the different language used for LLCs and corporations.

When it comes to the language of business entities, the first issue is to determining who owns the entity. In a corporation, the owners are known as shareholders. This is because they ownership of the corporate is represented by paper shares, and a person buys a certain number to represent their interest. An LLC, however, works a bit differently. There are no shares. Instead a person buys a percentage interest. Instead of being called a shareholder, the person is called a "member." Members own an LLC and shareholders own a corporation.

Creating the business entity is another area where terminology is often abused. To create a corporation, one "incorporates" by filing articles of incorporation with the relevant Secretary of State. To create an LLC, one "organizes" it by filing articles of organization with the secretary. It sounds like a simple distinction, but it is important because filing the wrong paperwork can result in the voiding of the business entity, a total disaster.

So, who governs the business entity? In a corporation, the Board of Directors is the governing entity. The number of directors is set out in the bylaws of the corporation and they are elected by the shareholders. They usually serve for a year. An LLC, of course, is completely different. The LLC is governed by the members. If there is more than a couple members, they usually elect a "manager" who is often a member, but doesn't have to be. This person usually serves for a year as well.

The formalities of the business entity is one area where LLCs and corporations are often distinguished. A corporation is often cracked upon because there are formalities required to keep it functioning. The formalities include proper notice of meetings, holding meetings and formalizing the minutes of same in the corporate book. LLCs do not require such formal function, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it anyway. If a dispute every arises regarding the running of the LLC [and it will], you want a paper trail regarding how the entity has been run. Without such evidence, any dispute boils down to a liars contest in court, to wit, a flip of the coin. Hold meetings and document them if you have an LLC!
